The Hall class engines featured two cylinders driving 6 feet diameter driving wheels. These engines were simpler than the 4-cylinder express passenger types but capable of a wide range of secondary express duties as well as hauling parcels and fast goods trains. 258 Hall class engines were built between 1928 and 1943, one of the first of the ‘class 5’ 4-6-0 types like the later Stanier ‘Black 5’ which became the mainstay of the British steam fleet in the later years.
